Good government; Casita compromise hits sweet spot, and city needs a ‘strong mayor’

In a democracy, you have to make some compromises to get things done.

And the Albuquerque City Council did just that Wednesday night passing a landmark zoning amendment that could increase the city’s housing supply, while respecting the property rights of homeowners who have sunk their life savings into their homes.

While it’s unfortunate the 5-4 vote on amending the Integrated Development Ordinance was so close after months of debate and extensive public input, the zoning code changes strike a balance between allowing people to do what they wish with their properties and protecting property values and residential neighborhoods.
